If people are complaining about the copy machine you want to be able to get it fixed really quickly. As the movie Office Space famously suggested a busted copy machine can be a real liability to office life, particularly to the morale and over all happiness of employees.

I worked at a job once that was totally mismanaged. There was tons of money being spent in some areas which were rarely the best uses of capital. Meanwhile office equipment was regularly broken or worse temperamental to the point of sucking up hours of employees time. More often than not it felt like I was that employee fighting with our copy machine.

The copier its self was a dinosaur from somewhere around the early Clinton years. Obviously there are older copiers but things have advanced more than a little since the era prior to Seinfeld. I would have to turn the copier on and off, load and reload paper, move ink, clear out jams that were obviously not existent it was a nightmare.

It was a nightmare that could have been avoided with copier leasing or a copier rental. If we were using a copy machine with a definitive shelf life and knowledge that there was a firm time period in which we could have replaced it, well, I might still be working at that miserable place.

I guess it all worked out for the better.
